Arthritis in Dogs: Signs, Treatment & How We Can Help
Arthritis is a common condition in dogs that causes joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It can affect pets of all ages but is especially common in older dogs or those with previous injuries.
While arthritis cannot be cured, it can be very effectively managed, allowing your pet to remain comfortable and enjoy a good quality of life.
What Causes Arthritis?
Arthritis develops when the protective cartilage within joints wears down over time. This leads to inflammation, pain, and reduced movement.
Common contributing factors include:
- Age-related wear and tear
- Previous injuries
- Cruciate ligament damage
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Excess weight
Signs Your Pet May Have Arthritis
Many pets don't show obvious pain - instead, you may notice changes such as:
- Stiffness, especially after rest
- Slowing down on walks
- Difficulty getting up
- Reluctance to jump or climb stairs
- Limping or favouring a leg
- Changes in behaviour (grumpy, withdrawn)
These signs are often mistaken for "just getting older", but they are frequently due to pain.
Treatment Options
Arthritis is best managed with a multi-modal approach, meaning combination of treatments.
Monthly Injections (Beransa)
A newer option is a monthly injection that targets pain pathways:
- Given every 4 weeks
- No daily tablets required
- Often very effective for improving comfort
- Suitable for many dogs, including those who struggle with oral medications
We have seen very positive results in many patients using this treatment.
Medications
Anti-inflammatory medications may be used to reduce pain and inflammation when needed.
Joint Supplements
Products such a:
- Antinol®
- 4CTYE™
.... can help support joint health and are often used alongside other treatments.
Weight Management
Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important factors in managing arthritis.
Evan small reductions in weight can significantly reduce pressure on joints.
Home Care & Lifestyle Changes
Simple changes at home can greatly improve comfort:
- Provide soft bedding
- Use non-slip flooring
- Avoid excessive jumping
- Use ramps where needed
- Keep exercise gentle and consistent
When Arthritis Is Caused by a Cruciate Injury
In some dogs, arthritis develops due to instability in the knee caused by a cruciate ligament injury.
If your dog has ongoing lameness or has been diagnosed with a cruciate problem, surgery may be recommended to improve long-term comfort and joint stability.

Arthritis Is Not "Just Old Age"
One of the most important things to understand is that slowing down is often a sign of pain, not ageing.
With the right treatment pan, many dogs show significant improvement in:
- Comfort
- Mobility
- Overall quality of life
