Feeding Bones to Your Pet - How to Do It Safely

Feeding bones to pets is a common topic among pet owners, but it can also be confusing. While bones can provide enrichment and dental benefits, they also carry risks if not given appropriately.

Understanding how to feed bones safely is important to help protect your pet's health.

Can Pets have Bones?

Yes - some pets can safely enjoy bones, but not all bones are suitable, and not all pets should be given them.

If you choose to feed bones, it's important to follow a few key guidelines.

How to Feed Bones Safely

? Always feed raw bones - never cooked bones
Cooked bones can splinter easily and pose a serious risk of injury or obstruction.

? Choose the right size bone for your pet
Bones should be large enough that your pet cannot swallow them whole.

? Supervise your pet while chewing
Always keep an eye on your pet to reduce the risk of choking or swallowing large pieces.

? Remove bones once they become small or worn down
Smaller fragments are more likely to be swallowed and cause issues.

What Types of Bones Are Generally Considered Safer?

If you choose to feed bones, some options are generally considered safer than others when fed appropriately.

These include:

  • Large raw bones with some meat attached
  • Raw beef or lamb bones that are too large to swallow whole

Avoid:

  • Cooked bones (including roast, BBQ, or leftovers)
  • Small bones that can be swallowed whole

Every pet is different - what is suitable for one dog may not be appropriate for another.

What Are the Risks?

Even when feeding bones correctly, there are still risks, including:

  • Broken, fractured or worn down teeth
  • Bones getting stuck in the hard palate of the mouth
  • Bones getting lodged in the Oesophagus (in the thorax!)
  • Obstruction in the intestines
  • Constipation or digestive upset
  • Marrow can lead to pancreatitis

Because of these risks, bones are not suitable for every pet.

Are Bones Good for Dental Health?

Chewing can help reduce plaque build-up, but bones are not a replacement for proper dental care. Regular dental checks and appropriate dental products are still important for maintaining oral health.

Are Bones Right for Every Pet?

Not all pets are suitable candidates for bones. Factors such as:

  • Age
  • Dental health
  • Medical conditions
  • Chewing behaviour

.... can all influence whether bones are appropriate.
